Casuarina Beach lies on the island of Karainagar in Jaffna District, northern Sri Lanka, about 20 km from the city of Jaffna. It is considered the finest beach on the Jaffna Peninsula and is also spelt Casoorina. The white sand beach runs about 1.5 km and takes its name from the casuarina trees growing along the shore, needle-leaved trees that look like pines and tolerate salt spray. Visitors reach it from Jaffna by road. The water is shallow, clear and turquoise, stretching far out before it deepens, and the waves are calm on most days. Twisted casuarina trees stand at the edge of the sand, and fishermen's wooden boats and nets lie along the shore. Visitors wade in the shallows, stroll the white sand and sit in the shade of the trees. Facilities are few, so bring water and food, and mornings and late afternoons are gentler than the midday heat.
