**A cathedral with a yellow dome facing the Atlantic — 116 years in the building, so its style changed halfway** — on Cádiz's sea front. Building began in **1722** on the money of **the American trade**, when Cádiz held the monopoly port for the colonies, ⚠ **and finished in 1838** — ✅ **so it began Baroque and ended neoclassical**; **and the transition is visible in the fabric**. ⚠ **Work stalled repeatedly** as Cádiz's trade declined — **so materials and designs changed with the money available**. ✅ **Its dome, faced in yellow tile**, is the city's mark from the sea. ⚠ **Salt and damp eat its stone** — **and nets protect passers-by from falling fragments**. ✅ **And from the Poniente tower** there is a view over the city and the ocean.

**Because it monopolised the entire American trade for a century — every ship out and back passed through here.** ✅ **The system**: **after Columbus's voyages Spain created the *flota* system** — ⚠ **colonial trade confined to a single port** under strict control, **to capture taxes and prevent smuggling and piracy**. ✅ **The monopoly port was first Seville**, ⚠ **but the Guadalquivir is shallow and silted**, **and ships grew too large to come up it**. ✅ **So the monopoly moved officially to Cádiz in 1717.** ⚠ **What that meant**: **all America's silver, gold, cocoa, tobacco and indigo entered Europe through this port**, **and everything shipped out left from it** — **for a full century**. ✅ **The effect on the city**: **it became among the richest and most open in Europe** — ⚠ **with foreign merchant communities (Irish, Genoese, French)**, **and early liberal ideas**; ✅ **and from here came the **Constitution of 1812** — Spain's first, **drafted in a besieged Cádiz during the war against Napoleon**. ⚠ **Then it all collapsed**: **the independence of the American colonies in the 1820s ended the trade**, **and Cádiz withered** — ✅ **which is why its old city survives as it is**.
