The Stone Cathedral is the emblem of Canela, the town next to Gramado; it is not actually a cathedral but the parish church of Our Lady of Lourdes, which people call the cathedral for its size and grandeur. It is built of dark basalt in English Gothic Revival style, begun in 1953 and finished in 1987. Its tower rises 65 metres over the town square and holds a carillon of 12 bronze bells made in Italy and installed in 1972. In 2010 it was chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of Brazil in a public vote. It stands in the heart of Canela on a broad tree-lined square, and the best view of it is from the square, especially when it is lit at night. Central Gramado is about 8 kilometres from Canela.
