The Catetinho was the first official residence of President Juscelino Kubitschek while Brasília was being built. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built in just ten days, between 22 and 31 October 1956, it is a simple wooden building, first nicknamed the Palace of Planks, where the president's team and the directors of Novacap held their meetings as the capital rose. The guitarist Dilermando Reis renamed it Catetinho, 'little Catete', after the Catete Palace, then the official seat in Rio. It opened on 10 November 1956 and was listed as national heritage three years later. It was planned without comfort or ceremony, so that the president would not be distanced from the workers who lived in shacks and tents. Free; Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00.
