Limestone formations.
The Witches' Cave is a limestone cave in Cerro Moncol at 1,830 metres, southwest of the town of Malargüe in southern Mendoza, protected as a provincial reserve since 1990 over 4.5 square kilometres. It formed in Jurassic sedimentary rock that rose from the sea floor as the Andes emerged, then was hollowed out by groundwater over thousands of years. Inside, halls and passages are decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations of striking shapes and colours, some reached by crawling or stooping. That is why visits run only with authorised guides, with helmets and lamps, in small groups, choosing a short circuit for families or a longer one for the adventurous. Book with a Malargüe operator that includes transport, guide and the reserve fee. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting muddy; the temperature inside stays cool all year.
