Caverna do Diabo, «Devil's Cave», originally called the Caverna da Tapagem, lies in the Caverna do Diabo State Park in Eldorado, next to PETAR and about 280 km from São Paulo, and is the second-longest cave in the state. The explorer Richard Krone discovered it in 1886, and its popular name came from local legends in the 1960s. Its entrance is about 40 metres high, and some 700 metres of galleries are open to visitors, fitted with lighting, walkways, stairs and handrails, making it one of the easiest caves in the region for families. Its finest formations are in one of its halls: stone curtains, columns, stalactites, stalagmites and calcite cascades. Tickets are R$19, half price for students and teachers, and the tour is compulsory with a local guide at about R$30 per person, in groups of up to 12, lasting about an hour. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-17:00; booking an entry slot on the official website is advised.
