Ouro Grosso Cave, «Coarse Gold», lies in the nucleus of the same name in PETAR in Iporanga and is rated a geodiversity site of national importance. It was named by prospectors who searched the area for minerals, and its value is above all geological, educational and recreational. The Ouro Grosso nucleus is about three kilometres from the Santana nucleus, and the cave is reached by a short path of about five minutes with wooden steps. Inside there is a waterfall and a pool where you can swim if you wish, and many consider it one of the hardest caves in PETAR, though others call it easy, so ask your guide about conditions before going in. The nucleus also holds the Alambari de Baixo cave and the Betari River natural pool, and river tubing on the Betari is popular nearby. A local guide is mandatory and best booked ahead; bring a torch, wear ankle-length trousers and clothes that can get wet.
