Caxambu is a small spa town of about 21,000 people in southern Minas Gerais, at 904 metres near the Mantiqueira range; one of the best-known towns of the Circuito das Águas, a short drive from São Lourenço, it is described as having the largest mineral-water complex in the world. It has twelve sources of sparkling mineral water, each with different properties, most of them inside the Water Park listed by the state heritage institute, along with a cold-water geyser. Visitors move between the small pavilions over the springs tasting the water, and stroll around the lake and under the trees. Its healing waters were found in 1814, drawing the sick from Minas, São Paulo and Rio, and Princess Isabel and her husband came for treatment in 1868. It then flourished as an elite resort with the mineral-water company of 1886 and the railway to Rio de Janeiro, became a city in 1915, and its old hotels still keep the air of that era.
