Adelaide Central Market is a large fresh produce market and one of the oldest in Australia. It sells fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, cheese and baked goods, along with cafes and eateries, and draws over 8.5 million visitors a year, making it one of the city's main attractions. It began in January 1869, when some traders moved from the East End Markets to a new site. It grew steadily, and about one million kilograms of fresh produce now arrive each month. In 2021 a large redevelopment of the adjoining arcade was approved, including a mixed-use tower. From outside you see a red-brick front lettered Federal Hall and a crenellated tower, finest in morning light. Inside are rows of colourful stalls, fish counters and modern murals. You can sense the city's mix here in foods from many cultures, and at Christmas a huge Santa stands above the building. It lies in the city centre, 300 m in a straight line from Victoria Square, an easy walk. It does not open every day, so check the days and hours first. Go early to beat the crowds. If you need halal food, ask stallholders about ingredients, as some stalls sell pork. Do try the seasonal fruit.
