Almaty's largest museum and one of the biggest in Central Asia, holding the country's most important collection of Kazakh archaeology, history and culture. It began in 1931 in the Ascension Cathedral and moved in 1985 into its present white building with blue domes, now a city landmark. Its halls take visitors on a journey through the history of the steppe: stone tools, pottery from ancient Silk Road towns, figurines and jewellery, armour and warriors of the nomad ages, and coins that circulated here over the centuries. A highlight is the ethnography hall, with a complete Kazakh yurt, furnished and decorated, alongside traditional costumes, silver jewellery and ornate horse saddles that explain nomadic life on the steppe. Foreign visitors pay 5,000 tenge without a guide and 10,000 with a guided tour, according to the museum's price list. It is a short distance from Republic Square.
