The Brasital Cultural Centre in São Roque opened on 1 May 1987 in the buildings of an old textile mill, with the aim of keeping the factory's memory alive and offering cultural and educational activities to the town. The mill was founded in 1890 by the Italian industrialist Enrico Dell'Acqua and was one of the first textile factories in São Paulo state, driving the local economy and employing much of the population. At its peak it covered 9,400 square metres, producing cotton cloth, bedspreads and towels sold across Brazil and abroad, with branches in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salto. Today the complex keeps the mill's old buildings and wide halls, and hosts exhibitions, workshops, shows and local events, with grounds suited to a short stroll. It makes a good stop on a visit to São Roque together with Sítio Santo Antônio.
