Calm and beauty.
The Usiminas Cultural Centre in Ipatinga, next to the Vale do Aço shopping centre, opened in September 1998 to host local, national and international productions. It is run by the Usiminas Institute, set up by the steel company in 1993 to support culture. The centre is considered the main cultural hub of the Vale do Aço metropolitan area, and its reach extends to neighbouring towns with a varied programme of workshops, plays and concerts; it regularly hosts the campaign to popularise theatre and dance and the Ipatinga Live Jazz festival. The complex includes the Hideo Kobayashi Art Gallery, a multimedia room, the Central de Ideias library and a Japanese garden. On 31 October 2002 its 724-seat theatre opened, with some of the most modern stage and sound equipment in the country, a 480-square-metre stage and an orchestra pit. Check the programme before visiting.
