The historic centre of Lapa, south-west of Curitiba, was the first architectural ensemble in Paraná to gain federal protection: the state listed it in 1989 and the national heritage institute in 1998. It spans 14 blocks with 235 lots that keep the architecture of the colonial period. The town's fame rests on the «Siege of Lapa» of 1894, when loyalist forces under General Gomes Carneiro held out for 26 days against federalist rebels from Rio Grande do Sul, an episode said to have saved the young republic and the reason its houses were protected. A landmark of the centre is the São João Theatre, built between 1873 and 1876 and listed at state and federal level, which over its history served as a field hospital, a hall for agricultural shows, a cinema and a radio station. The town suits a walk among its houses and squares; check museum and theatre hours.
