The historic centre of Cáceres is a protected area in this city on the Paraguay River in Mato Grosso, gateway to the northern Pantanal. It was listed by the national heritage institute in 2010, after preservation efforts that began in 1978 with the listing of the Jauru Landmark, followed by state protection of its surroundings in 2002. The protected area takes in the architectural and natural ensemble of the city centre: the river port quay, Praça Barão do Rio Branco, the cathedral, seen from outside, and the surroundings of the Jauru Landmark. It holds some 250 properties in a range of styles, from neoclassical to neo-Gothic and Art Deco, some in need of care. The finest thing to do is stroll along the Paraguay River at sunset, where fishing boats and river trips set off towards the Pantanal; the city is famous for its annual international fishing festival. The centre suits a quiet evening walk after a day in nature.
