Poet's childhood.
Itabira, a city in Minas Gerais about two hours from Belo Horizonte, is the birthplace of the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade, considered one of Brazil's greatest poets, and the cradle of the country's largest mining company. Its historic centre keeps old houses, the main church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and chapels from the mining era. In the historic centre stands the Casa de Drummond, the two-storey house where the poet spent his childhood, open to visitors and run by the Carlos Drummond de Andrade Cultural Foundation, set up in 1985. On the eastern slope of the Pico do Amor stands the Drummond Memorial, opened on 31 October 1998 and designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The Caminhos Drummondianos is an open-air museum created in 1997, with 44 steel plaques bearing the poet's verses along a seven-kilometre route through the city's districts. Here visitors combine poetry and history on a walking tour.
