The historic centre of São João del-Rei is the city's oldest and best-preserved urban core and one of the leading colonial architectural and urban ensembles in the south of Minas Gerais, about 13 kilometres from Tiradentes. It grew out of the 18th-century settlement of the old mining town, first along roads, streams and crossings around squares and spaces tied to mining, trade and administration, then consolidating its fabric among hills, valleys and bridges once it became a town. It brings together churches, chapels, stone bridges, fountains, two-storey and single-storey houses and public buildings. The national heritage service listed the city's architectural and urban ensemble in 1938, with its boundaries set in 1947, making it one of Minas Gerais's most important urban heritage sites. It makes a day of walking and can be reached from Tiradentes on the historic steam train.
