São Sebastião, the town facing Ilhabela island across the channel, is the oldest on São Paulo state's north coast, and its historic centre keeps colonial-era buildings, several of them listed by the state since 1969. Its landmarks include the mother church of São Sebastião, the old council house and jail, the Casa Esperança, considered the best-preserved colonial house in town, with original painted ceilings, and the Casa das Janelas, whose facade carries false doors and windows. Rua da Praia, the seafront street, runs between the main avenue and the pier with an old-time feel, home to the municipal theatre and a small craft market. The centre suits a short walk before or after the ferry to Ilhabela, with views over the channel and the island. Sources disagree on the dates of some buildings; check opening times for the churches and museums.
