The ring runs underground and is unvisitable while operating โ guided tours descend to real installations (control centre, historic accelerators, sometimes experiment caverns during technical stops) as the science schedule allows. Honestly: even without descending, the Gateway's original pieces and stories fully quench the non-specialist.
Claim the nitrogen show and kids' workshop on arrival (free, limited seats issued mornings), then the interactive halls at their pace, lunching in CERN's own restaurant among real physicists at canteen prices โ a half-day that occasionally manufactures a small scientist.
Because it is humanity's most successful standing cooperation story: 23 states and ten thousand scientists from history's enemies jointly building existence's most precise machines for profitless questions โ and the Gateway tells that human side as powerfully as the physics. Many leave moved by the idea before the particles.

The Science Gateway (2023), its architectural tubes by Renzo Piano, opened physics to everyone free: interactive halls where concepts are touched, theatrical liquid-nitrogen shows, children's experiment labs, and original accelerator pieces โ a full science day at zero francs. Underground tours of the real installations book online in a monthly race โ but the Gateway alone makes a complete visit, and tram 18 runs from the station to its door.
