Cerro Arco is a hill in the Andean foothills near Mendoza city, 1,668 metres high and rising about 543 metres above its base. It is named after Sergeant Major Antonio Arcos, an aide to General San Martín, who surveyed the area before the crossing of the Andes in the campaign to free Chile. It is one of Mendoza's favourite lookouts: a dirt road and trails for walking and mountain biking climb it, and the top gives a wide view over the green city in the valley and the snowy Andes to the west, best at sunset. The area has desert plants such as carob and cactus, birds of prey and, occasionally, puma tracks. The climb is free. The sun is strong and shade scarce, so bring water and a hat.
