A green mountain area north-east of Panama City rising to about a thousand metres, so it is far cooler than the city's heat, covered in dense cloud forest wrapped in morning mist, with small lakes, meadows and country houses, on the edge of Chagres National Park. Nature and bird lovers come here, as the forest is home to rare and colourful birds, and some private houses and lodges keep feeders that draw dozens of shimmering hummingbirds for visitors to watch up close. Forest trails lead to small waterfalls and clear streams. Its charm is the quiet and fresh air, the views from the heights over forests stretching to Lake Alajuela in the distance, and the mist moving between the trees. Butterflies and small colourful frogs are plentiful. The road is steep and winding, and many trails cross private land needing permission or booking, so it is best to go with a local guide. Never feed or touch wild animals, and watch them from a distance.
