Cerro Catedral, the Cathedral, named for its spiky rock towers, is Argentina's best-known ski resort, about 19 kilometres from Bariloche inside Nahuel Huapi National Park. It has some 48 kilometres of runs and the most snow days in Argentina, about 98 a year. In the southern winter, roughly June to September, it fills with skiers from Argentina and Brazil. In summer the cable cars and chairlifts carry walkers to the heights, with views over Lake Nahuel Huapi, Lake Gutiérrez and the Andes, and hiking trails lead on to mountain huts such as Refugio Frey, beside a small lake under the rock spires. Even non-skiers enjoy the ride up and the view. Ski passes are expensive and change every season, so book ahead, and the weather on top turns quickly, so bring warm clothes.

Yes. The lifts run for walkers with views over the lakes and the Andes, and hiking trails to mountain huts start from the top.
