Chapelco is a mountain and ski resort about 19 kilometres from San Martín de los Andes; its Mapuche name means «water of the chapel», after a local shrub. Its first runs were laid out in 1946, and its great appeal is its beauty: runs among old lenga forests and, from its mid-stations, a superb view of Lanín National Park, the conical Lanín volcano, Lake Lácar and the town at the foot of the mountain. It offers alpine, cross-country and freestyle skiing, snowboarding in a terrain park, snowmobile rides, husky-drawn sleds and snowshoe walks in the forest. The season is in winter, usually from July, and flexible passes can be used on any days of the season.
