El Centinela, «the Sentinel», is a rocky hill about five kilometres from Tandil, 298 metres high, named after the huge boulder on its top that looks like a guard watching over the valley. These rocks are among the oldest on Earth, more than two billion years old, shaped over time by wind and rain: the face exposed to the wind is smooth and concave, the other rough and convex. A local legend tied to the hill tells of Amaike, daughter of the chief of a native people who lived in these hills, a skilled horsewoman. Visitors climb short trails among rocks and trees to a view over Tandil and the surrounding valleys. The hill is free and open, and pairs with the Piedra Movediza and Lago del Fuerte in a day in Tandil.
