Cerro San Javier is the green range that rises behind San Miguel de Tucumán, reached by a road of more than a hundred bends, Route 338, that climbs some 24 kilometres through yungas cloud forest. The sierra covers more than 19,000 hectares and reaches about 1,876 metres. From its ridge the views open on one side over the city and its plain, and on the other over green tablelands backed by the Calchaquí peaks. Its mild climate makes it a summer refuge from the heat below, with holiday villages such as San Javier and Villa Nougués, and it is a base for paragliding, hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Driving and walking are free; paragliding flights and rides are paid. Mist can cover the top, so clear mornings are best.
