The Bamboo Cathedral is a stretch of road in Tucker Valley on the Chaguaramas peninsula, at the north-western tip of Trinidad. It runs for about 300 m, and giant bamboo bends over it from both sides until the stems meet, making a green tunnel like a church roof. On the shore of a nearby bay is a boardwalk for strolling. The Bamboo Cathedral is reached straight from Tucker Valley Road, and cars are no longer allowed on it. Some sources say the bamboo was planted during the Second World War. The boardwalk was built by the Chaguaramas Development Authority and runs for about 400 m along the shore of one of the bays. You walk under the bamboo in soft green light. Then you go down to the boardwalk, with its wooden deck, fountain and lawns, the bay and the Northern Range hills in front of you. It is a favourite place for a sunset walk. The Bamboo Cathedral is 13 km in a straight line north-west of Port of Spain, and the boardwalk is 5 km south of it. Both are free. Tucker Valley Road has no pavements and carries traffic, so keep to the side, and do not walk alone in deserted spots.
