The Champ de Mars is Paris's green carpet, unrolled at the feet of the Eiffel Tower: an open garden 780 metres long that began as a drill ground for the military academy's cadets — hence the name, after the Roman god of war — before becoming the city's most famous picnic lawn. This is where an Eiffel Tower visit becomes properly Parisian: bread, cheese and fruit from a nearby shop, a blanket on the grass, and the iron tower filling the sky in front of you. At dusk the park turns into a natural amphitheatre for the light show, as the tower sparkles for five minutes at the top of each hour. The park is open around the clock, ticket-free, with room for everyone: playgrounds, running paths, shady trees for a nap, and endless space for the best photos of your trip.
