The largest lake in Anhui and one of China's five great freshwater lakes, lying wholly within the city of Hefei. It covers about 775 km² and stretches 61 km from east to west, and its name goes back to the ancient state of Chao that once stood in the area. A local legend tells that a city sank where the lake now lies, and only an old woman and her daughter were spared, becoming two islands; hence the name of Laoshan, «old woman's hill», the largest island in the lake. On the north shore, the Zhongmiao temple stands on a red rock above the water. Walking the shores is free, while Laoshan Island with the ferry costs CNY 60, 75 by speedboat, and Zhongmiao CNY 10, per visitor guides; the temple is about 50 km from central Hefei.
