A turquoise mountain lake among the ranges of the Western Tian Shan, Tashkent's favourite summer escape. It formed behind a 168 m stone dam on the Chirchiq river, built between 1964 and 1970, which gathers the waters of the Pskem, Koksu and Chatkal rivers and holds about 2 km³. Its name is traced to the Persian «char bagh», four gardens. The Ugam range rises to the north, the Pskem to the east and the Chatkal to the south, and the water covered some 150 archaeological sites, studied before the dam was built. Villages ring the shore: Yusufkhona, Burchmulla, Nanay, Charvak, Sijjak and Bogiston. Every summer thousands of holidaymakers from Uzbekistan and neighbouring countries come here; the shores are lined with hotels, resorts, rental houses and cafés with traditional tapchan platforms by the water. Boats and jet skis run in season, and the road around the lake is spectacular. Reaching the lake and most of its shore is free; private beaches and activities charge. It is usually combined with the Chimgan mountains and Amirsoy nearby, as a day trip or an overnight stay; summer is the best season.
