The Château de Montrottier is a medieval Savoyard castle preserved intact on a hill near Annecy, with its imposing round keep (fifteenth century) and complete walls — a rare example of a castle never destroyed, arriving with its furniture and collections as its last owner left it. Its final collector — Léon Marès — filled it with the spoils of his world travels: arms and armour from Europe and Asia, Oriental porcelain, textiles, and rare German Renaissance bronzes. So the visit is castle and museum at once, and climbing the keep opens a view over Savoy's mountains and countryside. A half-day trip from Annecy (about 20 minutes) suiting families and castle lovers — a rural break from the old town's summer crush.
