Where the Hau River meets the Chau Doc River, floating houses line up over fish cages, a settlement that has grown since the 1960s and is known for raising the basa catfish the world knows from the delta. Families live in the house and farm fish in the cage below, feeding them through hatches in the floor. In January 2024, 161 of these floating houses, stretching for more than a kilometre, were painted in rainbow order, red, yellow, orange, green, blue and purple, and the stretch became known as the colourful raft village; from the water it reads as one long band of colour between river and sky. Boats leave the Chau Doc wharf for a short run between the houses, where you can watch the fish being fed, and trips often continue to the Cham village and Al Ehsan Mosque near Da Phuoc. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light for the colours.
