The world's best-known place to see giant pandas, a non-profit research and breeding centre in north Chengdu, founded in 1987 with six pandas rescued from the wild and now one of the world's largest panda conservation centres. The giant pandas live in large enclosures among bamboo groves, ponds and green hills, where you can watch them eat bamboo, climb trees and play; the base also has small red pandas with striped tails and a museum about pandas and the work to protect them. In the birth season visitors may see panda cubs in their nurseries, and the base has worked with zoos around the world on panda loans, making the animals China's ambassadors abroad. Tickets are about CNY 55, with entry from 07:30 between March and October and from 08:00 the rest of the year, per visitor guides. Come at opening time, as pandas are most active in the morning and sleep through much of the afternoon; the base is large, so use the internal electric carts.
