Cheow Lan Lake is the reservoir behind the Rajjaprabha Dam in Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand, mostly within Khao Sok National Park, about 72 km northeast of Khao Lak and 60 km west of Surat Thani in a straight line. Work on the dam began in 1982 and it opened in 1987; King Bhumibol named it «Rajjaprabha», meaning «light of the kingdom». It is 95 metres high and 761 metres long, and the lake behind it covers 185 square kilometres. It draws over 70,000 tourists a year and has been called «the Guilin of Thailand» for its scenery. Towering limestone cliffs and pillars covered in rainforest rise from the emerald green water, its arms reaching between the mountains in quiet bays. Small wooden houses float on rafts, and mist wraps the peaks in the morning. Visitors take longtail boats from the dam pier to explore among the cliffs; many stay overnight in the floating bungalows, swim and kayak, and walk through the forest to nearby caves. Trips usually run for a full day or overnight from Khao Lak or Khao Sok.
