A mountain area and ski resort on the spurs of the Chatkal range in the Western Tian Shan, at about 1,600 m and 85 km from Tashkent, nicknamed the «Uzbek Switzerland». Its name means «green grass» or «green valley». Above it rises Greater Chimgan, 3,309 m, shaped like a giant star with slopes and rocky ridges radiating in every direction. Old juniper trees cover the hillsides, mountain streams run through the valleys, and flowers and herbs bloom in spring. In winter the ski season runs from December to mid-March; in summer it is good for walking, picnics and horse riding. Chairlifts from Chimgan and neighbouring Beldersay climb to wide views over the mountains and Lake Charvak. Visitors report the Chimgan chairlift at about 40,000 som and the Beldersay lift at about 80,000 return, per visitor guides. Mountain weather changes fast, so bring warm layers even in summer.
