China's national botanical garden, chartered in 2022 by joining the Beijing Botanical Garden (the North Garden) with the garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Botany (the South Garden), on a planned area of nearly 600 hectares between the Fragrant Hills and Jade Spring Hill in the Western Hills. The North Garden, the larger and best suited to visitors, has a big conservatory of tropical and desert plants, gardens of roses, peonies, peach and plum, and a memorial museum to Cao Xueqin, author of «Dream of the Red Chamber»; flower fields bloom in spring and the trees colour in autumn. Tickets are CNY 10 for both gardens or 5 for the North Garden alone, the conservatory CNY 50 on a combined ticket, and the North Garden is open from 6 am to 9 pm from mid-March to mid-November, per visitor guides. The Fragrant Hills are close by, so the two combine easily in a day.

The North Garden suits visitors best, with the big conservatory and most of the flower gardens, while the South Garden focuses on research; the CNY 10 ticket covers both.
