Chishimba Falls is a set of three waterfalls on the Luombe River in northern Zambia, northwest of the city of Kasama. It draws visitors to this region with its scenery and easy access, and because the falls spread over only about 300 m, you can see them all on one short visit. The river runs north to south here. The upper falls, called Mutumuna, drop about 20 m. Next come the middle Kayela Rapids at about 10 m, and finally the main Chishimba Fall at about 30 m, for a total drop of about 60 m. The site also holds a small hydroelectric station commissioned in 1959 and later expanded, along with a museum under development according to sources. At the main fall, water plunges from a dark rock cliff into a basin full of spray, and rainbows appear over the valley when the sun is out. You can look from the rim through the railing or go down to see the cliff from below among rocks and trees. At Mutumuna the river widens between stone blocks, in a calmer, greener scene. The falls lie about 31.1 km from Kasama in a straight line. Flow is strongest after the rainy season, and slopes and rocks are slippery with spray, so wear sturdy shoes and keep children away from the edge. Stay out of the hydroelectric facilities and keep to the paths open to visitors.
