The Chișinău Botanical Garden is a large garden in the southwest of the Moldovan capital. Long paths run between trees and lawns, ducks swim on small lakes, trees blossom in spring, and benches line the water's edge. It was founded in 1950 on land in the Durlești river valley and moved in 1965 to its present 104-hectare site. It was laid out between 1966 and 1971 with sections including an arboretum, a rose garden, a rock garden and lakes for water plants. It is a research institute of the Academy of Sciences and opened to the public in 2001. You walk the paths between the garden's sections, past roses, trees and lakes, and sit on the grass or on benches by the water. Spring is the best time, when the trees are in blossom, along with early summer when the roses open. The garden is about 6 km in a straight line southeast of central Chișinău, reached by public transport or taxi. It is large, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
