The Chișinău Water Tower is a 19th-century stone tower with many-sided storeys and a projecting red roof, in the city centre. Today it houses the Museum of the History of Chișinău, and it is one of the prettiest old buildings in the capital. The tower was built at the end of the 19th century to a design by the architect Alexander Bernardazzi, on what was then the highest point of the city. With it came Chișinău's first sewer network. It served as a water tower from 1892 to 1940 and then became a fire tower. Its wooden top storey was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt between 1980 and 1983. Inside is the exhibition History of the City, with objects from the 15th to the 20th century. The top floor holds painting and photo shows and sometimes concerts and cultural events. The tower is in central Chișinău, 800 m from Stephen the Great Central Park. One report gives an adult ticket of 10 lei and says the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays; days change, so check before you go.
