Cholila is a farming town in a wide valley in northwest Chubut, near Los Alerces National Park, its land made of four valleys among the mountains and many lakes, including Rivadavia, Cholila and Lezana. European settlers and Syrian and Lebanese immigrants settled here in the early twentieth century, living from cattle. Cholila's most famous sight is a small log cabin on Route 71 where, in the first years of the twentieth century, the American outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid lived with Etta Place, having come to Patagonia under assumed names to live as ranchers. The cabin has been a protected heritage site since 1994 and can be seen and visited daily for free. Around town are horse rides, river fishing and roads to the lakes of Los Alerces. Cholila is a day trip from El Bolsón or Esquel.
