A leafy hillside zoo in Jiulongpo, about 8 km from central Chongqing, covering 45 hectares; it opened in 1955 as the Xiqu (West District) Park and was renamed Chongqing Zoo in 1960, and it is one of the three Chinese zoos with the most giant pandas, as well as a breeding centre for pandas and the rare South China tiger. It keeps more than 230 species and over 4,000 animals in areas for birds, big cats and plant-eaters; the stars are the giant and red pandas, white and South China tigers, hippos and rhinos. Tickets are CNY 25 from January to November and CNY 20 in December; it is open from 8 am to 6 pm, last entry 4.30 pm, the panda house from 8.30 am to 5 pm, and the pandas are most active around 9 am and 3 pm, per visitor guides. Zoo station on Metro Line 2 is beside the entrance.
