Chor-Chinor is an old garden of plane trees in the foothills near the town of Urgut in Samarkand Region, about 38 km southeast of Samarkand in a straight line. Its name means «four plane trees». Urgut is known for this grove, where some trees are said to be more than a thousand years old, and for its big bazaar, which draws shoppers from Samarkand. The garden is a traditional place of pilgrimage where locals come to rest, with a small mosque and an old complex. The town lies in mountain country, and its people work in trade, farming and crafts. The huge white trunks of the plane trees rise high above the paths, some hollowed out with age. The trees are mirrored in a clear pool in the middle of the garden, a sharp rocky peak rises behind, and a small brick mosque stands among the trees. Visitors stroll under the trees and sit by the pool, and many combine the trip with the busy Urgut bazaar, which is biggest at the weekend. It is a religious site, so modest dress is appropriate.
