A canal and pedestrian street in Wuchang, opened on 30 September 2011 as part of a new cultural district in central Wuhan: the Chu River is a 2.2-km canal joining East Lake with Sha Lake, and Han Street runs along its bank for about one and a half kilometres. The street is lined with grey- and red-brick buildings with arches in the style of the Republican era (1912–1949) alongside modern glass fronts, filled with fashion shops, restaurants and cafés; bridges cross the canal, and sculptures and small squares dot the way. It is at its best after dark, when the buildings light up and their glow is mirrored in the water. Entry is free at any time, and the lights are on from about 7 pm to 10 pm, per visitor guides.
