The Chyulu Hills are a mountain range in Makueni County, southeastern Kenya, forming a 100 km-long volcanic field about 58 km east of Amboseli in a straight line. The highest peak is 2,188 metres, and the national park here is part of the Tsavo conservation area with Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The hills are made of several hundred small lava flows and cones; volcanism began about 1.4 million years ago and the volcanoes are still considered active, the last two eruptions taking place in 1856. Leviathan Cave, about 11 km long, is one of the longest lava tubes in the world. There are no permanent rivers, but rain on the hills feeds Mzima Springs on the plains below. The hills appeared in the film Out of Africa. Black, cracked lava flows spread at the foot of rolling green hills, topped by volcanic peaks under grass and forest, with wide views over the Tsavo plains. Visitors walk the grassy hills, explore the lava fields and visit nearby Mzima Springs. The area is uncrowded and pairs well with a trip to Tsavo West or Amboseli.
