A mountain garden

A mountain botanic garden founded in 1852 as a branch of the Bogor gardens, at the foot of Mounts Gede and Pangrango, some thirteen hundred metres up, so its air is cool and damp and its plants are those of mountains and temperate climates, unlike the hot lowland gardens. The garden spreads over about eighty-five hectares of lawns and forest, with a neat Japanese garden, a moss garden, a cactus house, tall pines and eucalyptus, small waterfalls and streams. The broad lawns are ideal for family picnics, and the trail up Mount Gede-Pangrango in the national park starts here. Entry is a token fee of around twenty-five thousand rupiah at the local rate, possibly more for foreigners, plus a vehicle fee. It is cool here, with frequent afternoon rain. Allow half a day, and bring a jacket and umbrella. The garden is quieter and less crowded than Bogor's, and it is close to Taman Bunga Nusantara, so the two fit into one day.

Cibodas, Cianjur, at the foot of Mount Gede-Pangrango
Bogor is older and better known, with the palace and corpse flower; Cibodas is cooler and quieter, with lawns and mountain plants. Staying in Puncak, Cibodas is closer.
