An old town north-west of Ningbo that was the seat of Cixi County for more than 1,200 years, from 738 under the Tang until 1954. Its name means «the city of Ci»; it was known of old for its handicrafts and was listed among China's national historic towns in 2005. It keeps the plan of an old administrative town, with straight streets and white-walled houses, and its main sights are the old county yamen, the Confucian temple, the imperial examination hall and the painted gate of Feng Yue; traditional crafts that the local government is reviving are shown here. The streets are free to walk, while the joint ticket for the five main sights costs CNY 75, from 8.30 am to 4.50 pm, last entry 4.30 pm, with some halls closed on Mondays, per visitor guides.
