The Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon) circuit is the second best-known trip into the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park from Barreirinhas, leading to a less crowded part of the dunes where wide, clear lagoons lie scattered among the white sand hills. The 4x4 vehicles stop at the foot of a tall dune, and visitors climb a steep sandy slope, sometimes helped by a rope, to reach the top, where a panorama of dunes and lagoons opens to the horizon. They then walk among the lagoons and swim in them, in a quieter setting than the Lagoa Azul circuit. Trips leave in the morning around 8:30 and return around midday, or in the afternoon to end at sunset, and take about four to four and a half hours. How full the lagoons are depends on the rainy season, so go between June and September. The climb needs reasonable fitness, and the park may only be entered with accredited guides.
