A star-shaped military fortress on top of Cap Diamant, the highest point of Old Quebec, built by the British between 1820 and 1831 to protect the city from a possible American attack, and counted as the largest British fortress built in North America. The Citadelle is still an active military base, home of the Royal 22nd Regiment, the French-speaking regiment of the Canadian Army, and an official residence of the Governor General of Canada. It is linked to the city walls that make Quebec the only walled city north of Mexico. The visit includes a guided tour of the fortress, its ramparts and historic buildings, with wide views of the river, and the regimental museum with its weapons and uniforms. In summer the changing of the guard is held every morning with tall bearskin hats and red uniforms. Tickets are about C$22 per adult with the guided tour, per visitor guides. The changing of the guard runs from 24 June to the first Monday of September and may be cancelled in bad weather.
