Civita di Bagnoregio is a small village belonging to Bagnoregio in the province of Viterbo, central Italy, about a kilometre east of Bagnoregio and 87 km north of Rome in a straight line. It is one of the «Most Beautiful Villages of Italy». The only way in is a footbridge from the neighbouring town, and an entry charge has applied since 2013. Because the hill it stands on keeps eroding, it is known as «the dying town». It lies in the Valle dei Calanchi, an area of badlands east of Lake Bolsena. The village sits on top of a crumbling hill of yellow tuff, ringed by sharp grey and white gullies, and a long, slender concrete bridge climbs up to its gate. Inside are quiet stone lanes, a small square and houses hung with flowers, and in the morning mist often surrounds the hill so it looks like an island. Visitors park in Bagnoregio, walk to the viewpoint and cross the bridge up to the village. The climb is short but steep, and the village is small enough for an hour or two.
