Cochem Castle, the Reichsburg Cochem, stands on a hill above the town of Cochem on the banks of the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany, about 39 km southwest of Koblenz in a straight line. About 5,300 people live in the town. The town was first mentioned in the early Middle Ages and grew into a centre of trade and vine growing in the Electorate of Trier. The present castle was rebuilt in the 19th century in Gothic Revival style on older foundations. The town is now an important tourist centre in the Moselle wine region. The castle, with pointed towers, windows and dark roofs, crowns a green hill covered in vineyards, above the old town with its colourful half-timbered houses on the riverbank. The calm Moselle bends at the town between hills terraced with vines. Visitors walk up the hill in about 15 minutes from town and tour the castle with a guide. Boats sail the Moselle from Cochem to nearby villages, and a chairlift climbs to a viewpoint above the town.
