Codrington College is an Anglican theological college in Saint John parish, eastern Barbados, one of the oldest Anglican theological colleges anywhere, and today affiliated with the University of the West Indies. It is an arched coral-stone building with a lily pond in front and a long avenue of royal palms. The college was founded from the bequest of Christopher Codrington, who on his death in 1710 left his Barbados plantations to a church society to set up a college. Those estates were worked by enslaved people, as were all the island's plantations at the time. The original building was designed in 1713 on the model of an Oxford college, but only the southern part was built for lack of money. It was affiliated with Britain's Durham University from 1875 to 1965. You see the stone front with its three arches, the pond before it and the tall palms around. The grounds also hold the Principal's Lodge, an old plantation house with a porch of carved coral stone. The place is quiet and is a place of study and worship, so behave with respect. The college is 17 km in a straight line north-east of Bridgetown and 3 km south-east of the Gothic Parish Church. A small visitor fee may be asked.
