The Colegio del Uruguay is a historic secondary school in the city of Concepción del Uruguay, founded on 28 July 1849 as the country's first secular, free school. Its historic building opened in 1851 and was declared a National Historic Monument in 1942; the school, now the Colegio Superior del Uruguay, still works in it today, and many doctors, writers and jurists of Argentina and neighbouring countries studied here. The historic building is one of the city's landmarks. For the school's hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary in 1999 part of it was refitted to house a history museum telling its story through photographs, documents and old furniture. Guided visits run at set morning and evening times that vary by season, so check before going.
